Like Lt. Uhura of 'Star Trek', who broke ground for blacks on television, Tara & Willow, as the first long term lesbian couple featured on prime time television, were ground breaking. They quickly became icons, especially for gay youth who looked to the characters and their travails to find a reflection of themselves and their own issues, in a medium where few if any gay and lesbian characters existed.
Willow & Tara were unique and precious. Tara is cruelly gone, but her legacy for understanding and compassion for others endures.
